¿Quién es Ud.? ¿Cuánto tiempo lleva enseñando español aquí en Murphy? (Who are you? How long have you been teaching Spanish here at Murphy?)
Señora Gale: Hola, me llamo Yanira Gale. Nací y crecí en México. A los veinte años me fui a estudiar inglés a California. Como pueden adivinar, me casé y ya no regresé a mi país. He sido maestra de español por casi veinte años, pero este es mi primer año en Murphy.
- Hi, my name is Yanira Gale. I was born grew up in Mexico. When I was twenty, I went to California to study English. As you can guess, I got married and I did not go back to my country. I have been a Spanish teacher for nearly 20 years, but this is my first year teaching at Murphy.
¿Cuáles clases enseña? (And, what classes do you teach?)
Señora Gale: Enseño la clase de Español 2 y Español Culturas.
- I teach Spanish 2, and Spanish Cultures.
¿Dónde aprendió a hablar inglés? (Where did you learn to speak English?)
Señora Gale: Empecé a estudiar inglés en México, pero cuando vine a los Estados Unidos, me di cuenta que no sabía tanto como pensaba, y que me faltaba estudiar mucho más. Continué estudiando inglés en un colegio comunitario, y unos años después en la universidad.
- I started learning English in Mexico, but when I came to the United States, I realized that I did not know as much as I thought, and that I still needed to study a lot more. I continued studying English at a community college, and at a university, a few years later.
¿Fue difícil? (Was it difficult?)
Señora Gale: La verdad me gustaba (y me gusta) estudiar y aprender. Para mí, lo más difícil siempre ha sido pronunciarlo correctamente. A pesar de los años que tengo estudiándolo y hablándolo, continúo teniendo dificultad para pronunciar algunas palabras y sonidos que no existen en español.
- The truth is that I liked (and still like) to study and learn. For me, the most difficult part has always been pronouncing things correctly. Despite the many years I have been studying and speaking English, I still have difficulty pronouncing some words and sounds that do not exist in Spanish.
¿Cómo decidió ser profesora de Español? ¿Ésta es la profesión que creía que terminaría ejerciendo? (How did you decide to become a Spanish teacher? Is this the career you thought you’d end up having?)
Señora Gale: Una vez que aprendí inglés, estudié y me gradué de intérprete traductora. Trabajé por dos años interpretando casos médicos y legales. Esta carrera me dejó ver una parte de la vida que ignoraba, casos criminales. Entonces me di cuenta que quería trabajar ayudando a otros. Entonces regresé a la universidad para estudiar una carrera en educación.
- Once I learned English, I studied and graduated as an interpreter and translator. I worked for two years interpreting medical and legal cases. This career allowed me to see a side of life that I ignored, criminal cases. That is when I realized that I wanted to work to help others. I then went back to school to study for a career in education.
¿Cómo es la vida en México? (What is life like in Mexico?)
Señora Gale: Tengo muy buenos recuerdos de mi vida en México. Yo viví en Texcoco, que entonces era un pueblito cerca de la ciudad de México. Muchos de mis primos y tíos vivían a tan solo unas cuadras de mi casa. Mi abuelita, la mamá de mi mamá, también vivía relativamente cerca. Todos los domingos nos reuníamos en la casa de mi abuelita. Ella era pobre y vivía en un departamento muy pequeño, pero todos cabíamos. Si pudiera describir mi vida en México en pocas palabras sería “amigable y familiar”
- I have really good memories of my life in Mexico. I lived in Texcoco, then a small town near Mexico City. Many of my cousins, aunts and uncles lived just a few blocks from my house. My grandma, my mom’s mom, also lived relatively close. Every Sunday we gathered at my grandma’s house. She was poor and lived in a very small apartment, but we all fit. If I could describe my life in Mexico briefly, it would be “friendly and familial.”
¿Cómo es la gente? (What are the people like?)
Señora Gale: No quisiera generalizar, ya que hay todo tipo de gente en México. La gente que yo conocía cuando vivía en México era muy amable, cariñosa, y divertida. Era muy fácil hacer amigos, y siempre me sentí incluida, aceptada y amada. Esto no ha cambiado, ya que cada vez que voy a México me topo con gente lindísima. Sin embargo, estoy segura que hay gente mala también… solo que no me he topado personalmente con gente así.
- I would not want to generalize, because there are all kinds of people in Mexico. The people that I met when I lived in Mexico were kind, loving, and fun. It was very easy making friends, and I always felt included, accepted, and loved. This has not changed, because every time that I go to Mexico, I meet wonderful people. However, I am sure that there are bad people too… I just have not encountered them.
¿Hay algo interesante sobre México que quiere compartir con nosotros? (Is there something interesting about Mexico that you want to share with us?)
Señora Gale: México no es como lo muestran en las noticias. Aunque tiene aspectos negativos, y hay mucha pobreza, es mucho mejor y más bonito de como lo presentan.
- Mexico is not as it is shown on the news. Although there are negative aspects, and there is a lot of poverty, it is much better and more beautiful than it is presented.
¿Cuál es su comida favorita? (What is your favorite food?)
Señora Gale: Una de mis comidas favoritas es el guacamole y las enchiladas. También disfruto comida de muchos otros países.
- One of my favorite foods is guacamole and enchiladas. I also enjoy foods from many other countries.
¿Podría hablar un poco sobre su familia? (Could you talk a little bit about your family?)
Señora Gale: Mi familia en Seattle incluye mi esposo, mi hija y mi hijo.
Mi familia en México es grandísima.
Mi familia mexicana en Seattle incluye un grupo de 7 familias latinas que nos hemos adoptado mutuamente como familia para apoyarnos y divertirnos todos juntos.
- My family in Seattle includes my husband, my daughter and my son.
My family in Mexico is huge.
My Mexican family in Seattle includes a group of 7 Latin families that have adopted each other as family to support and have fun all together.
¿Qué idioma habla Ud. en casa? (What language do you speak at home?)
Señora Gale: En casa hablo en inglés con mi esposo, y en inglés y español con mis hijos.
- At home I speak English with my husband, and English and Spanish with my children.
¿Qué es lo que más le gusta de ser profesora de español? (What is it you like most about being a Spanish teacher?)
Señora Gale: Lo que más me gusta de ser maestra de español es poder ayudar a mis estudiantes a aprender a comunicarse en español, y a comprender la cultura.
- What I like about being a Spanish teacher is being able to help my students to learn how to communicate in Spanish, and understand the culture.
¿Cuáles son sus metas de enseñar el español en Murphy? ( What are your goals for teaching Spanish at Murphy?)
Señora Gale: Como soy nueva en esta escuela, todavía estoy determinando cuales son las posibles metas que podría tener aquí en Murphy. Sin embargo, una de mis metas como maestra es diseñar, desarrollar e integrar aspectos de la educación digital híbrida para extender las oportunidades y el alcance de aprendizaje de mis estudiantes.
- Because I am new at Murphy, I am still determining what are the possible goals that I could have here. However, one of my goals as a teacher is to design, develop and integrate aspects of hybrid digital education in order to expand the opportunities and learning scope of my students.
¿Por qué cree que es importante enseñar el Español? (Why do you think it’s important to teach Spanish?)
Señora Gale: Yo creo que es importante aprender un segundo idioma por todos los beneficios que proporciona. Al aprender el idioma y cultura de otros, podemos aprender y comprender mejor el nuestro. Aprender otro idioma aumenta el número de personas con quienes nos podemos comunicar y a quienes mejor podemos comprender. Aumenta las posibilidades de tener un mejor empleo, o negocio. Y aparte de mejorar nuestra capacidad intelectual y mental, nos ayuda a ser mejores seres humanos.
- I believe that it is important to learn a second language for the many benefits that it provides. As one learns the language and culture of others, we can learn and better understand our own. Learning another language increases the number of people with whom we can communicate and understand better. It increases the possibilities of having a better job or business. And besides improving our intellectual and mental capacity, it helps us be better human beings.
Para los que quieren aprender Español, ¿Cuáles consejos les daría para ayudarles? (For those who want to learn Spanish, what tips would you give them in order to help them?)
Señora Gale: Un consejo para los que estudian español, o cualquier otro idioma es que lo usen y que se diviertan aprendiéndolo. Hay muchas formas de aprender un idioma, ya que no se aprende solo en la escuela, sino en todas partes y de muchas formas.
- A piece of advice for those who are studying Spanish, or any other language is to use it and have fun learning it. There are many ways to learn a language, as it is not only learned at school, but everywhere and in many ways.
Y, finalmente, la pregunta más importante (o al menos para mí), ¿Cuál canción en español es su favorita? ¿Por qué? (And, finally, the most important question, at least for me, What is your favorite song in Spanish? Why?)
Señora Gale: Me gustan muchas canciones. Unas canciones me gustan por su ritmo, y otras por su mensaje. Unas me gustan para bailar, otras para escuchar, y otras para cantar. También me encanta enseñar el español con canciones. Una de mis favoritas es la canción chilena “Gracias a la vida,” interpretada por Violeta Parra.
- I like many songs. I like some songs because of their rhythm, and others because of their message. I like some to dance, others to listen, and others to sing. I also like teaching Spanish with songs. One of my favorites is the Chilean song “Gracias a la vida” interpreted by Violeta Parra.
Into the Jungle
