DECA is an association of students that encourages the development of business and leadership skills through academic conferences and competitions. DECA is a club at many high schools throughout the entire country. At Archbishop Murphy, DECA has been a club for around 8 years. Many people have enjoyed their experiences within DECA, competing in competitions and working in other ways around the school.
DECA, as an organization and as a club, helps students grow in skills that are important even outside of school. First, DECA allows students to learn about and explore various aspects of business and prepare for a future career in business or any other industry. DECA competition also helps students strengthen their presentation skills. Students can compete in a spontaneous, impromptu role play event, or assemble a slide deck presentation for prepared events. DECA also provides students with great networking opportunities with peers from their own school, students from other schools, and working professionals.
Ms. Hall joined the Archbishop Murphy community last August, and is the DECA advisor. When asked what her favorite part of DECA is, Ms. Hall said, “I love business, so I just love that students are able to expand on their business knowledge and gain real-world experience! I enjoy talking to students about business and seeing them develop a love for business. I also love helping students gain important 21st century and workplace skills.”
Besides competing, DECA is also involved with many things around the school. Our DECA club runs The Murph, the student store located in the cafeteria. Here, you can find snacks, candy, drinks, and light meals at every lunch. The DECA club also holds other fundraisers, such as selling holiday-themed drinks on Valentines Day and St. Patrick’s Day. In the coming years, DECA is looking to expand their presence around campus even more!
The DECA club at AMHS is a great way to get involved with other students and working professionals, as well as prepare for a future career in business and strengthen important social skills.
